New England roofs take a beating: freeze and thaw cycles, coastal wind, heavy snow load and long stretches of ice. A replacement done right starts well before the first shingle goes down, with a full inspection of the deck, the flashing and the ventilation path.

Architectural asphalt shingles remain the best value for most homes in the region. They carry higher wind ratings than three-tab shingles and hold up better against ice dams when paired with a proper ice and water barrier along the eaves and valleys.

Ventilation is the part homeowners hear the least about and pay for the most. Intake at the soffit and exhaust at the ridge keep the attic cold in winter, which is exactly what prevents the melt and refreeze cycle that creates ice dams.

Finally, read the warranty. Material warranties cover the shingle, not the labor. Ask your contractor what the workmanship warranty covers, for how long, and whether it transfers if you sell the house.
